Smell is probably the most understatedly powerful sense that we have. We use our sense of smell in almost everything. But did you know that our sense of smell is connected to our memory? This is the very idea behind the power of perfume scent. There are seven primary odors: camphoric, musky, roses, pepperminty, etheral, pungent and putrid. Each primary odor (or even their combinations) can conjure images associated with our memory. For example, the smell of a favorite dish can bring back images of cooked meals back home. The scent of roses can turn back time and bring one to that momentous prom night. The perfume scent of musk brings back images of Dad. Perfume scent has that power. It can influence one's mood or disposition simply by triggering memories that are most likely associated with the perfume scent. Think famous British designer John Galliano's debut perfume "Galliano" which resembles the scent of a woman. The perfume scent is described as light, floral and sweet and to capture the essence of a woman's smell, Galliano mixed together the scents of lavender, rose, bergamot, amber notes and violet. Some lines even produce perfume scents in series. A classic example is the Lonestar Memories by the Tauer Perfumes. This series of perfume scents conjure images of the old days in the Wild West. The perfume scent is a mixture of sandalwood, geranium, cedar wood, jasmine, cistus, carrot seed, vetiver, clary sage, myrrh, tonka, and birchtar. To create a perfume, essential oils, aroma compounds, solvents and fixatives are mixed together to come up with the desired pleasant smell. Because there are tons of perfume scents out there and due to the uniqueness of each person, choosing the right perfume can be quite a daunting task. There are simple tips however to consider in choosing the right perfume scent. Some parfum experts have categorized scent types into six. Each scent type adheres to different moods and characteristics. For example, those who love the outdoors and the smell of freshly cut grass would probably prefer perfume scents under the scent type "Green". The "Oriental" scent type would be more appealing to the sexy and mature ladies. The romantics would probably prefer the "Floral" scents while those who love fruits would prefer the "Citrus" scents. Those who love the ocean and the fresh air will definitely like the "Ocean" scent type while those who prefer masculine and smokey smells would fall under the "Woody" scent type. If you have finally decided which scent type you would like to purchase, the next step is to wear the perfume and actually experience the perfume scent on you. Most stores have testers and this is a great idea before making the purchase. Please note that perfumes, especially the branded parfums, can be quite costly. Dab or spray lightly on your collarbone and wrist not only to make sure you're not allergic, but to also ensure you feel great wearing the perfume scent. Remember, perfume scent is very similar to fashion. It is a way of expressing one's self. With this in mind, perfume is an investment. So take your time and make sure to purchase a perfume scent you know in your heart that you would love to wear day after day after day.
