Despite one Company getting a good response from the local ladies when advertising singles events in an area near Manchester UK, few men have signed up. This could well be due to the fact that men tend to be more shy about taking part in events like speed dating. Women tend to book in twos or threes and come as a group, but with men it seems to be more of a personal thing. Men usually come on their own and are a bit more embarrassed about letting on that they are doing it. Women are happy to pass the details of the nights on and spread the word to their friends, but men are not so keen. Also, when running an event for over-40s, for example, men are sometimes reluctant to come because they are looking for someone younger than themselves! The company is running a campaign on the social networking website "Facebook" in a bid to get Manchester’s men more interested, as they are also running events in other areas around the Country where they are experiencing similar problems. Facebook has turned out to be a really good way of getting men to sign up, and anyone who turns up to one of their events gets a month free on the online dating service, which seems to be quite popular amongst the guys. They always try to get a roughly even number of men and women – that's what makes for a successful event. People can be nervous about coming to these things, but in the end of the day everybody is in the same boat. Amblehurst hotel manager Armaan Chohan said the hotel has signed up to host a regular speed dating night on Mondays for the next two months, and may then look at hosting it twice a week. He said: "It is good from a business point of view because it fills up the hotel on a night that is usually quite quiet, and speed dating is something that attracts a lot of young professionals.”
